Holla for Challah

I admit it; I have mad challah love. Tender crumb, slightly sweet, perfect for toast, sandwiches or french toast. It’s also ridiculously easy with the use of the bread machine.

3/4 C room temp water (6oz)
1/3 C room temp butter (2.6 ounces, by weight)
1 egg, room temp (crack into a bowl and microwave 10 seconds)
1/4 C sugar
1 tsp salt
3 C bread flour
1 3/4 tsp yeast (regular plain dry yeast, not that stuff that is supposed to be for bread machines)

This yields a 1.5 pound loaf. Use the sweet bread setting if you have one. This is not the quick bread setting. If you do not have a sweet setting, use the white bread setting.

If doing rolls or buns, use “dough” cycle. Mine is the Cuisinart CBK-100 Programmable Breadmaker, which beeps after first rise is complete; takes 90 minutes.

Turn out onto cutting board, roll or pat into rectangle and use pizza cutter to cut into portions needed. After cut/shaped, transfer to the buttered dish you will be baking in for rolls, or onto a silicone baking mat-lined baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise a second time until doubled or slightly more than doubled, then remove wrap and bake at 350 for 20-22 minutes until golden brown on top.

Makes 16-20 rolls in a 9×13 dish, 8 hamburger buns or 10 hot dog buns. Once you make hamburger or hot dog buns, you will never be able to buy them again. I mean, you *can* buy them, but store-bought buns will never measure up. You’ve been warned.
