It’s apple season! Granny Smiths are a great apple for cooking with because they are especially firm, so they soften but dont get mushy when cooked or baked. That makes them the perfect apple for making this deep-fried treat.

They make something similar to these at Legoland, but if you don’t live near San Diego, or don’t wish to shell out $7 to park and $70 to buy a ticket for the privilege of paying $4 more for a small cup of these, then consider this post my gift to you.

They are gluten-free and because you prep and freeze them several hours in advance, they are a great dessert to serve guests, as the cooking part takes only a few minutes and produces a fresh, warm treat that can be shared.

to make two large servings:
3 granny smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced into thick french fry shapes. Mine averaged about .5″x.25″ each.

Shake to coat with cornstarch, shaking off the excess.

Place in container in freezer for about 2 hours, up to 6 hours ahead of frying.

Preheat oil to 375 and fry half at a time for about 3 minutes.

Drain and toss with cinnamon sugar (1/4 C sugar + 1/4 tsp cinnamon)

Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
